Understanding Re-finishing vs Screen & Recoat
The key difference between refinishing and screening & recoat lies in the depth and purpose of the process. Refinishing involves a thorough sanding down to the bare wood, which levels the surface and removes deep scratches, bumps, and other imperfections. After sanding, the wood can be stained with a chosen color or tint. Once the stain has dried and cured, one or two layers of clear coat are applied to protect the floor. On the other hand, screening & recoat followed by a re-coat is a less invasive procedure that lightly sands away only the top layer of the existing clear coat. This process exposes the wood’s surface without removing the underlying stain or color, addressing only the micro scratches on the surface. After this light sanding, a new layer of clear polyurethane coat is applied to refresh and protect the floor.
